SNAPTU — Symbian OS Phone Twitter Application Series

Snaptu is a free downloadable twitter application that is compatible with mobile phones with Symbian OS. To check if your celphone is a Symbian OS, you can check this site, Appmobilize, or getjar website. Actually, it is more than a twitter application. When I first used it, my impression was that it looks like my iPod touch — where you will find this little icons of different applications.

Snaptu is like an application that contains applications. It is like a ‘sari-sari’ store in your mobile phone. It contains various applications. The applications that I can relate to are: Facebook, RSS Reader, Weather, Picasa, Flickr, and Twitter. I mostly used Twitter, Facebook, and sometimes Flickr. You can also add shortcut to your favorite links — in my case, I added shortcut for Multiply, my ‘home.’

You can customize the applications/contents of its Main Menu by adding and removing applications.

Now, let’s go to Snaptu’s embedded twitter application (the main story of this post). Note that I am big fan of Gravity twitter application by @janole so I might be a bit harsh or not nice towards Snaptu. But all in all, I believe Snaptu is one of the best free (twitter) application for the main reason that it’s quite snappy and transition or switching from one page to another is smooth. Unlike other free twitter applications that you need to count to see it loads new page. And, the user-interface is not that crude and rough.

Below is the Home of Snaptu’s Twitter. On the very top is the Update Status — to create tweet. Then, Replies (mentions), Messages (Direct Message/DM), and Timeline of your tweets and the people you follow. One eeny weeny not user-friendly here is the Update Status — being on the top most, I need to scroll up back if I want to post some random tweets and I’m already way down below the timeline.

It has the usual twitter application functions like — View Profile, Reply, Send DM, Retweet, Favorite, Add to Group.

Twitter Functions

One function I like about Snaptu’s Twitter is its ability to create group which I can use to group/categorize the people I follow. This really comes handy when you follow quite a number of people. You’re probably thinking of Tweetdeck now — something like that.

You can find the create-group, Group, function from the Menu.

With my Nokia E63, I simply need to click left and right my phone’s scroll bar to switch from one group to another.

Another function implementation I like about Snaptu’s Twitter is how they open an image in a tweet. It is not messy. It does not redirect me to a browser. It looks like being viewed within the Snaptu. (Edit to add) One of its limitation is there is no way you can access your photo gallery from Snaptu, so you cannot add image to your tweet from Snaptu.

I also like its Search and Trending Topic functions. Other applications just do not include these or shabbily implemented them. Theirs is nicely put. It lets me save searches.

For a free application, it is quite very good. The only major complain I have about Snaptu’s twitter application is that its number of tweets in its Timeline is pretty limited. It only lets met set to a max of 40 — I do not know if it is a bug or not. But nevertheless, I really like it.

Now, into the other applications of Snaptu. Facebook. I find its facebook application pretty limited. You can only read status updates, which I think is also good — I’m free from the facebook applications’ updates of my contact. I can go straight to their status updates which is the most important for me since I’m not much interested with their ‘farms.’ =) There’s no comment or like button/functions.

It kinda just looks like Snaptu’s twitter user interace.

If you click on status update, it will open the Profile page of the owner of the status update.

This is Snaptu’s flickr application — pretty basic. But good enough for quick browsing of pictures.

There are still a lot of things you can do with Snaptu. So go and try it. You can download it from Snaptu website. Or, you can also get it from getjar website. Check getjar website if you want to know if your Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Huawei, Sharp, LG, and other brands is compatible to download Snaptu.
