Smart to bring ‘world’s cheapest smartphone’ to PH

Smart is expected to offer Ideos within the P5,000-P6,000 price range for prepaid, and to bundle it with a monthly plan as low as 500 for postpaid. Company officials said more Smartphone models are in the pipeline.

“Mobile Internet usage in the Philippines has been growing steadily and is now poised to take off. We will now take it to next level with Smartphones that are affordable to a broader market. This is in line with our vision of ‘Internet for all’,” said Orlando B. Vea, Smart’s chief wireless adviser.

Recent studies indicate that there are over 30 million Internet users in the Philippines and that the majority of these access the worldwide web through Internet cafes. PC penetration is only about 20 percent of the population.
